The global software company SAP is to boost its Irish-based facilities with a new EUR110m investment, supported by the government's IDA Ireland development agency.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny made the announcement, which will see the creation of 250 new jobs at SAP's bases in Dublin and Galway.

The investment will help the company expand its offerings to businesses in Ireland and throughout Europe, most notably within its services, sales and global support divisions.

In addition, 100 of the new jobs will be located at SAP's new Cloud Services & Support Centre in Galway.

Mr Kenny said the move provides a boost to Ireland's growing reputation as a global hub for the digital industry.

"SAP is the largest software company in Europe and the third largest software company in the world," he remarked, "and its decision to further expand its Irish operations demonstrates the real value of an economically stable business environment and Ireland's position in Europe when it comes to attracting the overseas operations of major technology companies like SAP."

Indeed, SAP is the predominant software used by European businesses for purchase to pay and the major investment could lead to more companies adopting such operations as confidence grows around the industry.

Currently, SAP employs 1,200 people at its Irish facilities and Liam Ryan, Managing Director at SAP Ireland, said the new investment will "gear up" the company for its "next wave of technology innovation to meet business needs in the areas of cloud computing, mobile applications and high-performing database technology".

Ireland may become an attractive location for companies to locate their shared services operations after the country received additional investments from large businesses.
