Guatemala has joined its neighbouring Latin American countries, Brazil Mexico and Argentina, in mandating electronic invoicing.
By the end of 2012 companies with high volumes of invoices will be required to submit their invoices electronically in accordance with the Guatemalan Tax Administration. To begin with, the mandate only applies to companies who submit over one million invoices a year. This will gradually be extended to companies sending between 1501 and 3000 invoices, which will be required to implement electronic invoicing by the end of March 2013.
The Guatemalan government aims to reduce business costs and increase compliance of tax obligations.
