Hilton Hotels CIO and Shared Services Man Leaves
Hilton EVP and CIO Tim Harvey has left the company only one year after Hilton was recognised as number 2 in the InformationWeek 500 ranking. The reasons for his departure are unclear and unannounced. But having been there for 10 years, did the recent addition of corporate shared services dilute Harvey's ability to focus on CIO leadership?
Only in May 2008 was Harvey given responsibilities, in addition to his CIO remit, for shared services for the company. Some CIOs believe that the combination of their current responsibilities, which are typically more customer focused, with those of corporate shared services, which is clearly very internally focused, can prove to be a destructive mix. Essentially the pull between serving the customer experience and supporting the increase in sales, and then internal systems support and process optimisation to aid cost reduction can be unworkable.
