India’s leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel opened its Centre for Shared Services for Taxation at a ceremony held on 6th November. Mr. Manoj Kohli, CEO, Bharti Airtel said “The Shared Services initiative is part of an overall transformation programme undertaken by us to improve the efficiency, speed and quality of service. The Shared Services will deliver all taxation compliances, and also prepare for the new Goods and Services Tax regime which is expected in 2010. We are proud of our tax compliance record, especially with our large scale and widespread operations. With this launch, we will be able to scale up our operations to more than 200 million customers whilst sustaining our compliance track record."
Bharti Airtel has contributed around €590 million in service tax to the Indian exchequer during the year 2008-09 and is amongst the largest service tax contributor in India. The SSC will be run as a centre of excellence where multi-functional processes such as HR, Supply Chain, Finance and Tax will be undertaken for the entire company.
