Microsoft has officially announced the launch of two Australian data centers as part of its Azure cloud computing platform

The announcement, which came at the beginning of Microsoft’s 21st TechEd conference in Sydney, sees two data centres go live in Australia, with one each located in Melbourne and Sydney and are now available to all Australian Azure customers.

Key benefits of the deal will see businesses reassure customers that key data hosted by Azure accounts would not leave Australia, whilst it will also allow a dedicated fibre-optic link to an Azure data center through either Equinix or Telstra through its ExpressRoute service.

Australia Managing Director of Microsoft Pip Marlow said: "Today is a historic day, a monumental day, because it's the first day Australian customers can log on and choose the Azure Australian Geo. The time and the tools are here and now to concentrate on what it is you do everyday".
